It may be useful to think of a play as a SERIES OF EVENTS with a BEGINNING, MIDDLE and END.
This is not the only definition, and it isn't enough to guarantee "Good Theatre" by any means, but I have found that keeping this short definition in mind can get out of hot water when you get stuck in a draft.
It's a good place to START.
